Let's face it....the journey to sobriety can be challenging, but the rewards are plentiful - improved health, relationships, and overall quality of life.
One aspect of health that is often overlooked in recovery is gut health.
Alcohol consumption may have damaging effects on the gut, disrupting the balance of beneficial bacteria and leading to a range of problems, including nutrient deficiencies and digestive troubles.
Here's a 3-step guide to healing your gut in sobriety.
Eat Fermented Foods
Fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi are rich in probiotics - beneficial bacteria that can help restore the balance of microorganisms in your gut. Fermented foods support gut health, enhance immune function, improve digestion and absorption of nutrients, and even boost mood and mental health. Incorporating a variety of fermented foods into your diet can be a delicious and healthy way to support your gut health in recovery.
Add in Fiber-rich Foods
Next, focus on increasing your intake of fiber-rich foods. A fiber-rich diet can help promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria, improve digestion, and support overall gut health. A diet that’s high in fiber is associated with lower cholesterol and improved blood sugar control- which if you didn't know—a balanced blood sugar level can help you manage sugar + alcohol cravings.
Good sources of fiber include fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. These foods also offer a wealth of other health benefits, including reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Did you know that women in between the ages of 31-50 should be shooting for 25 grams of fiber per day? So, fill your plate with colorful fruits and veggies, snack on nuts and seeds, and choose whole grains over refined ones.
Consider Taking Enzymes
Cutting out alcohol can be a major step towards improving your gut health, but it's not the only one. Alcohol can cause nutrient deficiencies and disrupt the food breakdown process, which is where enzymes come in. Gut enzymes are vital proteins that assist in breaking down food into absorbable nutrients, aiding in the digestion of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Supplementing with enzymes can enhance your overall digestive health, making it easier for your body to extract nutrients.
Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is also crucial for gut health. Water helps remove toxins and maintain digestive system health. It can also alleviate constipation, a common concern after giving up alcohol. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water daily, more if you're active or live in a hot climate.
Seek Professional Advice
In addition to these tips, it may be helpful to speak with a healthcare professional, certified coach or a registered dietitian for personalized advice on whole-health support for your gut health after quitting alcohol.
Everyone's body and recovery journey is different, so what works for one person may not work for another.
Caring for your gut is essential to your recovery journey, so make it a priority. Your body and mind will thank you!
