Getting sober is a huge victory. But let’s be honest, it doesn’t always feel like smooth sailing at first. The brain and body have to adjust to life without alcohol, and that means dealing with things like mood swings, anxiety, or brain fog. It’s all part of the process, but here’s the good news: There’s a way to support your brain during this transition so you can really thrive in sobriety.
It’s all about amino acids.
If you're already sober, you might be noticing that you're still dealing with some emotional ups and downs or fatigue. That's because alcohol messes with your brain chemistry, and it takes time for it to get back to balance. This is where amino acids come in. They help replenish the neurotransmitters (the chemicals in your brain) that alcohol wiped out.
Let’s dive into the three amino acids that can really make a difference in your sobriety journey:(there are more that I use in my daily practice & with clients, but today we are focusing on these 3!) 5-HTP, L-Theanine, and D-Phenylalanine.
1. 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan): Your Mood Booster
Alcohol depletes serotonin—the "feel-good" neurotransmitter. No wonder you might feel more anxious, irritable, or even a little down in early sobriety. This is where 5-HTP comes in. It’s the precursor to serotonin, so it helps your body produce more of it. When serotonin levels are balanced, you’ll feel better emotionally and have an easier time managing stress.
How to use it: You can typically start with 50-100 mg per day. Start low and work your way up if needed. And a quick note: Always check in with your healthcare provider or coach to make sure you're using the right dose for you.
**Take special care if you are already taking an SSRI or an MAOI medication and take your 5HTP at least 6 hours away from your other medication. This is an example where I would suggest working with a certified coach to discuss dosing.
2. L-Theanine: Calm Without the Drowsy Feeling
L-Theanine is another powerhouse. It’s an amino acid found in green tea that helps calm the mind without making you feel groggy. If you’ve been dealing with anxiety or stress since ditching alcohol, L-Theanine can help you relax, improve your focus, and even help you sleep better.
How to use it: You can take anywhere from 100-200 mg per day. You can use it throughout the day if you’re feeling stressed or add it to your evening routine to help you wind down. Again, it’s always a good idea to work with a professional to get the exact amount that suits you.
3. D-Phenylalanine: Your Mood and Motivation Helper
D-Phenylalanine helps boost dopamine—the neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure and motivation. It can be especially helpful in early sobriety when you're still adjusting to life without the "reward" of alcohol. Plus, it can also help with pain relief, which is a bonus if you’re dealing with physical discomfort as part of your recovery.
How to use it: A typical dose is between 500 mg and 1,000 mg per day, but always check with your coach or healthcare provider for personalized advice.
Why Does This Matter in Sobriety??
When you drink alcohol regularly, it messes with the balance of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA in the brain. These changes can leave you feeling off in your sobriety. But by adding these amino acids into your routine, you’re giving your brain a little extra help to heal and get back to its best self. The goal is not just to stay sober, but to feel better while doing it.
By supporting neurotransmitters and boosting brain function, these amino acids help with:
Stabilizing your mood (goodbye anxiety and irritability)
Improving sleep (hello restful nights)
Boosting energy and focus (no more feeling sluggish)
Work With a Coach or Healthcare Provider
Now, here’s the thing: Amino acids are powerful tools and very safe, but it’s really important to work with a certified coach or healthcare provider when choosing the right supplements for YOU.
They can help you figure out the right doses and amino acids for the symptoms you are experiencing AND ensure you’re using them safely and effectively. There’s no one-size-fits-all regarding supplements, and your coach can help you fine-tune things to get the best results.
Final Thoughts
Sobriety is a journey, and it’s not always easy. But you don’t have to go it alone or just hope your brain gets back to balance on its own. Amino acids like 5-HTP, L-Theanine, and D-Phenylalanine can give you the support you need to feel better, calmer, and more energized as you navigate life without alcohol. Just remember to take it slow, consult with a coach or healthcare provider, and trust that your body is healing. You’ve got this, and these amino acids are here to help you thrive!
